BMW DME Repair FAQ
What is a BMW DME and how does it differ from a regular ECU?
BMW calls their engine control unit the DME (Digital Motor Electronics) for petrol engines, or DDE (Digital Diesel Electronics) for diesel. It functions identically to an ECU — managing fuel injection, ignition, boost, and emissions — but BMW’s implementation is tightly integrated with the CAS (Car Access System) immobilizer via a unique ISN (Individual Serial Number) code. Both modules must be matched, which is why BMW immobilizer and DME work requires specific expertise.
What is the CAS module and can you repair it?
The CAS (Car Access System) manages key recognition, immobilizer authorization, and start permission on E-series and F-series BMWs. When it fails — or loses sync with the DME — the car won’t start even with a valid key. We repair CAS modules and perform ISN coding to re-sync the CAS with your DME. We have the specialized tools and expertise to perform this work correctly.
Can you fix BMW FRM (Footwell Module) failures?
Yes. FRM module failure — causing headlights, interior lights, windows, and mirror controls to stop working — is one of the most common BMW electrical faults we see, especially on E90/E92 3 Series and E60 5 Series. We repair the FRM board at the component level for a fraction of BMW dealer replacement cost.
Do you repair water-damaged BMW DMEs?
Yes. Water intrusion under the battery tray is a well-known failure mode on E60 5 Series and E70 X5 models. We inspect and repair the DME board, replace corroded components, and bench-test before shipping back.
How long does BMW DME repair take?
Most repairs complete in 48–72 business hours from receipt. Rush 24-hour service is available for an additional $75–$100.
